Frankincense Essential Oil

Frankincense, comes from the tree in the Boswellia genus.  They are small trees and/or shrubs that are native to north east Africa down by the Red Sea. The tree has several feather-like leaves that have white or pale pink flowers.

The plant produces a natural resin which is then collected through a rather consuming process of making a notch in the bark. After several days, the resin has hardened and is scraped from the tree.

Frankincense was traditionally used as incense and was also ground into a powder and used as eyeliner by Ancient Egyptian women. Today, the essential oil, attained by steam distillation of the resin, is largely used and it holds countless therapeutic value.
